MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WFRV) — A 37-year-old Wisconsin man has formally been charged with a felony after allegedly shooting toward police officers last week.

Hyrom Stokes, of Milwaukee, has been charged with second-degree recklessly endangering safety while using a dangerous weapon. This charge stems from an incident that occurred on October 16, 2024, shortly after 11:15 p.m. on the 2100 block of W. North Ave. in Milwaukee.

If convicted, Stokes could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. Additionally, because he allegedly used a dangerous weapon during the incident, the maximum prison term could be extended by five years.

On the night of the incident, two Milwaukee Police officers were sent to the area around W. North Avenue and W. Fond du Lac Avenue for reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they heard multiple shots, with initial reports indicating at least ten shots were fired.

As the officers approached a vacant commercial mall, they heard an additional three to four loud shots and quickly exited their squad car for safety. One officer reported seeing a rifle barrel protruding from a second-story window.

Concerned for their safety, the officers retreated and called for backup. Shortly after that, Stokes exited the building and was taken into custody.

A detective who responded to the scene reported recovering multiple firearms, including:

  • A 7.62mm AK-style Draco pistol
  • A bolt-action rifle equipped with a magnified optic
  • A .38 Special revolver

Officers also discovered several spent 7.62mm cartridge casings, with 11 casings located on the roof of the mall.
