Wisconsin man arrested in southern Chicago suburb, officials seize ghost gun & numerous narcotics

COOK COUNTY, Ill. (WFRV) – A Wisconsin man was charged with gun and drug felonies after officials in the Chicago area recovered multiple firearms, suspected narcotics and other drug paraphernalia from a suburban Chicago home.

According to a release from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, officials from the Organized Crime Division and Hostage Barricade Team executed a search warrant on Wednesday at a home in the 15000 block of Lincoln Avenue in Harvey, a south Chicago suburb.

The search warrant stemmed from an investigation into possible drug activity at the home. Before executing the warrant, officers saw one of the residents, 46-year-old Demario Hughes, enter a vehicle and flee, who was known to have a revoked license.

Officers arrested Hughes without incident following a traffic stop. After Hughes’ arrest, officers witnessed 43-year-old Dennis McCarty of Platteville, Wisconsin, leave the home and return shortly after.

Upon executing the search warrant, officers recovered the following items:

  • Two guns
    • Non-serialized ‘ghost’ gun
    • Previously reported stolen handgun from Valparaiso, Indiana
  • 31-round extended magazine with nearly 100 rounds of live ammo
  • A vehicle behind the home that was reported stolen in Chicago
  • Suspected narcotics:
    • 15 grams of suspected ecstasy
    • Five grams of gray/purple powder
    • 14 grams of suspected cannabis
    • Roughly 10 grams of suspected psilocybin mushrooms
    • Two grams of suspected cocaine
    • 10 grams of suspected crack cocaine
  • Multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia

McCarty was taken into custody inside the home, and officers executed a search warrant for his vehicle which resulted in the seizure of a handgun. Neither of the two men holds a valid gun license.

On Thursday, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges against both Hughes and McCarty:

  • Felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon/felon
  • Felony drug charges
