According to a release from the Wisconsin DNR, flood insurance acts as an important tool in preventing financial vulnerability from flooding as most homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage.

One inch of water can cause up to $25,000 in damage, so even small or moderate floods can be financially devastating if you don’t have the right insurance. Whether you rent or own, there is flood insurance coverage available for your needs.

DNR officials say those in Wisconsin can be eligible for purchasing federal flood insurance even if their property is outside of a Special Flood Hazard Area as long as they are residents of a community that is a member of the National Flood Insurance Program.

They add that, on average, 40% of the insurance claims made through NFIP are made outside of a Special Flood Hazard Area.

Homeowners and renters can reportedly protect their homes and their belongings by purchasing a private flood insurance policy given that their agent sells flood coverage.

DNR officials say the DNR Floodplain program has staff serving as experts on federal flood insurance and helping to manage the community’s enrollment in the NFIP.

They state that Wisconsinites should sign up today to ensure coverage before the spring showers begin as there is usually a 30-day waiting period before the NFIP policies go into effect.
