Teens arrested for damaging, burning mailboxes in Wisconsin

BARRON COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – Two teenagers, a 17-year-old from Wisconsin and a 15-year-old from Minnesota, were taken into custody on Thursday for allegedly vandalizing, burning, and destroying several mailboxes in northwestern Wisconsin.

According to the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, the incidents occurred on December 26, 2024, starting just after 3:00 p.m. Deputies received multiple reports of mailboxes being damaged, burned, and destroyed at various locations in northern Barron County.

Deputies, assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, responded to the area and documented six complaints. A description of the suspect vehicle and its license plate was shared, prompting the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office to assist in the investigation.

Around 4:00 p.m., the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol stopped a vehicle near Shell Lake. Evidence recovered during the stop included mail and packages taken from the damaged mailboxes.

The 17-year-old suspect from Webster, Wisconsin, is being held in the Barron County Jail and faces multiple counts of arson, with formal charges pending.

The 15-year-old suspect from Cambridge, Minnesota, is being referred to Barron County Health and Human Services for charges of arson as a party to a crime.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities are looking into other similar incidents in Barron County and nearby areas. The United States Postal Inspector has been notified and may pursue additional charges.
