Record warm temperatures in northeast Wisconsin has golfers getting back on the green

DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) – A stretch of warm weather to start the week had local golfers taking full advantage of the early-season conditions.

“First couple rounds of the year, it’s always a little rough getting started, but just happy to be golfing in Wisconsin in March,” said Blaine Bouer of Green Bay.

At Ledgeview Golf Course in De Pere, golfers came and went throughout the day, eager to get back on the green. Bouer brought his colleague and friend, Luke Workman, out for a round on their day off. Workman, who moved to Brillion from Southern California last summer, was still adjusting to Wisconsin’s spring golf conditions.

“It’s my first time out here, but beautiful course so far,” Workman said. “Our feet are wet, but it’s good to be out here. I’m still warming up from winter. It’s still a little chilly, I guess, but I’m getting my swing back.”

While some area courses have opened, others are still waiting for conditions to improve.

Charlie Demske, grounds director at Hilly Haven Golf Course, says maintenance crews are working to prepare the course, but lingering frost has delayed the opening.

“This year was a little bit different from the last few years where we actually had quite a bit of frost—so much as three feet or more—and it takes some time to get it out of the ground,” Demske said.

However, the Lil’ Haven Practice Facility, located at 2419 School Rd. in Greenleaf, is open.

“We opened up our driving range, actually plowing out the snow last week, and got it open. Some people came out right away, as soon as the snow was plowed off,” Demske said. “And of course, everybody likes to get those practice rounds in as early as possible!”

Demske hopes to open Hilly Haven within the next week or two if the warmer temperatures continue and the remaining frost clears.
