THE LATEST FROM STORM TEAM 5…
A warm front has sliced the WFRV coverage area in half today, with 30s and 40s on the cooler side, with 50s and 60s on the warmer end. This front also brought in a few thunderstorms earlier this morning.
This evening, plan on skies being mostly cloudy to overcast with some light precipitation scooting by the far north along the WI/ UP border. However, as this front starts to interact with the cooler airmass, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop later this evening and tonight mainly north of HWY 29. Low end severe risk, cant rule out some hail and gusty winds. If the temperatures are cool enough, some freezing rain is possible as well.
The first system will begin to exit later tonight and as it does so, the cold front will likely bring a chance of some rain or freezing rain for the Fox Valley late tonight and around daybreak tomorrow.
We will begin the weekend on a fairly quiet note under cloudy skies with the exception of a few isolated rain or freezing rain showers. We should stay dry until the late afternoon Saturday as our next system builds in. Scattered rain and freezing rain will likely become more widespread during the evening and into Sunday night.
We have a few winter related headlines to mention. A WINTER STORM WATCH goes into effect at 7pm on Saturday for Shawano and southern Oconto and Marinette counties and lasts through Sunday at 7pm. This has been issued for snow and sleet accumulations, with ice accumulations over .10″ likely.
In the counties shaded in purple, that being Langlade, Menominee in both WI and the UP, and northern Oconto and Marinette, an ICE STORM WARNING goes into effect FROM 7PM Saturday to 7pm Sunday. This is where significant ice accumulations of 0.25-0.5″ are possible, with localized higher amounts are possible. The last one issued was back in 2022, with only four being issued since 2005.
Widespread rain, freezing rain, and snow is expected to last much of Sunday, finally tapering late Sunday night. With the forecasted ice accumulations, this will result in dangerous travel and the possibility of power outages as the ice could break off tree limbs.
Monday should be a quiet day, but our next messy Spring storm bringing rain and snow moves in Tuesday night through Wednesday.
