FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – After responding to a stove fire in a Fond du Lac apartment on Wednesday evening, crews installed new smoke detectors after clearing the apartment of smoke.
Around 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, crews with the Fond du Lac Fire Rescue say they were called to a fire in an apartment in the 400 block of North Peters Avenue.

However, when crews arrived, there was no active fire. Firefighters credited FireStop Rangehood Fire Suppressors that had been installed on a stove, which were activated when the fire began. The FireStop Rangehood Fire Suppressors are small canisters above the stove that release an extinguishing agent to suppress a fire.
The damage was contained to only the stove and some nearby cabinets, but without the suppressors, firefighters say the damage would have been much worse.

It was noted that the apartment had no working smoke detectors, so firefighters installed two new smoke detectors in the apartment.
Smoke detectors are needed on every floor at a minimum, and should be in every bedroom. They also should be tested regularly to make sure they are still functioning properly. This incident is also a good reminder to never leave any cooking unattended.
