APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Appleton Area chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) is hosting events in Neenah to support the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).
A march through downtown Neenah was held at 3 p.m. on December 5, starting at the Neenah Public Library. After the march, participants heard from speakers and attended a meeting and screening of the documentary Ratified in the library’s Shattuck Room.
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which seeks to ensure equal rights for everyone regardless of sex, was approved by Congress in 1972. However, it missed a 1982 deadline to become law. Supporters say it should still be officially recognized, as the required 38 states finally approved it in 2020.

Appleton Area NOW, Wisconsin’s only active NOW chapter, advocates for issues such as equality, bodily autonomy, combating violence against women, and rights for LGBTQIA+ and marginalized communities.
A second march will take place on Tuesday, December 10, at 5 p.m. to mark 101 years since the ERA was first introduced.
